Meso- and microplastics in the Baltic coastal environment

Mirco Heseler a Ph.D. student in Ecology and Environmental Science has been granted the award by Lithuanian Research Council for the achievements in his research field.

Mirco and coworkers developed marine litter monitoring methods that are applicable at sandy beaches in rural and urban areas. Cost-effective methods focus on smaller litter (2-25 mm), allow the involvement of volunteers, and can serve as a basis for calculating pollution baselines for defining the Good Environmental Status for Baltic beaches, as required by the MSFD.

In 2018-2020 Mirco published 5 papers on this topic, three as the first author!
